The Magic of Sant’Anna: Celebrating Culture in Sorrento

Every summer, from July 26th to the following Monday, Sorrento comes alive with sparkling snowflake-shaped lights, shimmering fireworks nightly, and street vendors selling delectable treats. This vibrant, joyous celebration is done to honor the patron saint of Marina Grande, Sant’Anna – the mother of the Virgin Mary, protector of fishermen and of women in childbirth.

In her honor, the town of Sorrento built a beautiful green-and-yellow domed church in the heart of Marina Grande, and organize this festival annually. Starting in Piazza Tasso and leading into Marina Grande, intricate and colorful purple, green, and yellow light-up arches illuminate the path to the church, with red and orange floral lights decorating the rest of the area.

On July 26th, the festival begins and the lights are first illuminated. Then, on the Sunday after, the statue of Sant’Anna is carried through the town during the procession. As a marching band leads the way, people will parade the statue out of the church, around Marina Grande, and then up into Sorrento as they bring Sant’Anna to the hospital to offer protection to those who need it. The procession is incredibly moving, with the entire community rallying around it, and is something you cannot miss!

The last day of the festival is immediately after, finishing with a grand firework show! On Monday night, a beautiful array of fireworks lights up the night sky, with plenty of boats full of people watching from the water. This light show is truly unlike any other – if you’re near Sorrento, it really is a must-see!
